What is
Carisolv®?
A modern method for treating caries - with the least
possible discomfort and to enable you to retain your
original teeth for as long as possible. In most cases, the
treatment is painless.
How does it work?
The dentist applies gel to the tooth. The gel softens the
caries (decayed area) and the dentist can gently scrape it
away. The cavity is then filled in the normal manner.
Is drilling never necessary?
In many cases, the dentist does not have to drill. However,
it is sometimes necessary to use a drill to remove anything
that might be in the way, such as enamel or an old filling -
places where generally no pain is involved.
Are anaesthetics necessary?
Normally, anaesthetics are not necessary. Studies have shown
that 70% of patients did not use anaesthetics. Of the
remaining 30%, nearly all the patients chose anaesthetics
"just to be certain".
Why should I choose Carisolv®?
Primarily for two reasons: Carisolv enables you to retain
more of the healthy parts of your teeth and in most cases
you avoid the pain and discomfort that can result from
treatment with a drill.
Are there any side-effects?
No, to date, no side-effects have been reported. There are
more than 50 different studies showing that no side effects
occur. So far, more than 250,000 patients have been treated
with Carisolv.
Is it dangerous if I should accidentally swallow the gel?
No.
Is the method well
documented?
Yes. There are more than 50 different studies showing, the
effectiveness of the gel, the fact that the caries is
completely removed, that it is in no way dangerous and that
there are no side-effects, for example.
How long has this method
existed?
The first patients were treated in 1995. Carisolv has been
on the market since 1997.
How many people have been
treated?
To date, more than 250,000 patients have been treated.
Is it more expensive than
traditional methods?
There is some additional expense consisting partly of the
material costs for the gel, and partly of the time involved.
As the method is considerably gentler than treatment with a
drill, it takes somewhat longer to repair the cavity.
What does the gel contain?
It consists of a mixture of sodium hypochlorite and three
amino acids.
Can I apply Carisolv®
gel myself?
No. A layman can not determine when a tooth is free from
caries, nor can any layman fill a cavity.
